CAIR Action Alert: Contact State Rep. Regarding Proposed Immigration Bill
(SOUTHFIELD, MI) - The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) is calling on all people of good conscious to express concern to MI State Representative Kim Meltzer over an immigration bill she plans to propose, which is patterned off of the recent controversial bill passed in Arizona.
Arizona's recent law gives legal authority to local and state law enforcement officers to pull drivers and request proof of citizenship, which many politicians and civil rights advocates believe will invite racial profiling.

"The proposal of an Arizona type immigration law in Michigan is unconscionable and irresponsible," said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. "Not only would the passage of such a law invite ethnic and religious profiling in Michigan, it would tax our local and state law enforcements decreasing resources, involving them in enforcing federal immigration law. We urge people of good conscious to express their concerns to State Rep. Meltzer."
IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED: (As always, be POLITE and RESPECTFUL.)

Attend Dismissal Hearing Of Hijab Lawsuit
(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 1/1/10) - CAIR-MI is asking Michigan Muslims and other people of conscience to attend a dismissal hearing in Federal court pertaining to a lawsuit filed against a Wayne County judge who demanded a Muslim female to remove her hijab during a name change procedure last year.
CAIR-MI is a co-plaintiff in the lawsuit, which seeks to ensure that people of all faiths have the right to wear their religious attire in Michigan courts as long as such attire does not interfere with witness identification.
