Judge Says Hate Blogger Cannot Use Civil Rights Group’s Name

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/10/11) -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a prominent Washington-based Muslim civil rights group, said today that a federal judge in Michigan told an anti-Muslim blogger she can no longer misuse its name.

In a hearing today, Judge Avern Cohn of the U.S. District Court in Detroit told hate blogger Debbie Schlussel that she can no longer use the name "Council on American-Islamic Relations" in reference to herself or organizational names she has registered. Judge Cohn requested further briefings on Schlussel's use of "CAIR" because she recently changed her use of the acronym to "Council on American-Israel Relations" instead of "Council on American-Islamic Relations."

http://www.freep.com/article/20110110/NEWS05/110110065/CAIR-wins-partial-court-victory-vs-Schlussel

"Today was a big step toward clearing up the confusion that Debbie Schlussel clearly stated she intended to cause through her malicious actions," said Dawud Walid, executive director of CAIR's Michigan chapter.

CAIR sued Schlussel for using multiple versions of CAIR's name in violation of the Muslim civil rights group's trademark rights. The lawsuit also alleges that Schussel is "funneling donations for an entity she calls 'CAIR-Michigan' into an online account she has publicly used on prior occasions as a receptacle for donations to other entities [she] controls."

SEE: CAIR's Lawsuit Against Debbie Schlussel

http://www.cair.com/Portals/0/pdf/Final-Filing.pdf

On her blog, Schlussel said she registered the CAIR names to "to drive the Muslims crazy." On Twitter, Schussel tweeted that she would use CAIR's misappropriated names "to expose and fight #Islam." She has a long history of anti-Islam and extremist postings. The Southern Poverty Law Center classified Schlussel as an "anti-Islam blogger."

In one recent post, headlined "No Tears for Egypt's Coptic Christians," Schlussel wrote that the recent terror attack on a Coptic church in Egypt was "a great example of karma." "It's a bitch. . .I wish it could go on forever and that both sides would lose," wrote Schlussel. [NOTE: CAIR issued a statement condemning the church bombing.]

CAIR-MI Files EEOC Complaint Against Popeyes

(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 9/29/10) - The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today filed an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaint against a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurant in that state on behalf of a Muslim who alleges denial of employment based on his religion.

The Muslim job applicant reported to CAIR-MI that he recently applied for employment at a Popeyes franchise in Detroit, Mich. On September 11, he was hired, but then reportedly told to shave his beard before beginning employment.  The complainant reportedly informed the general manager that he wore his beard for religious reasons, after which he was allegedly told that he could not begin employment until he shaved.

On September 21, the complainant arrived for orientation and again explained the religious significance of his beard but was sent home by the manager.

On September 27, he approached the manager with a letter from CAIR-MI explaining the religious significance of the beard while addressing safety and health considerations. The complainant told the manager he was willing to wear a covering such as a hair net or mask.  The complainant was again denied employment.

"We urge Popeyes to take immediate action to bring its hiring policies into compliance with long-established legal guidelines for reasonable religious accommodation in the workplace," said CAIR-MI Staff Attorney Lena Masri.

Masri said Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employers from discriminating against individuals because of their religion in hiring, firing and other terms and conditions of employment. The act also requires employers to reasonably accommodate the religious practices of an employee, unless doing so would create an "undue hardship" for the employer.

In 2008, the EEOC issued new guidelines on accommodating religious beliefs and practices in the workplace. The guidelines offer protection for workers who wear religious attire such as hijab.

In a statement, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said:

"We condemn this cowardly attack in the strongest terms possible and ask that the perpetrators be punished to the full extent of the law. No religious or political ideology could ever justify or excuse such wanton and indiscriminate violence. The attack was particularly heinous in that it targeted the all-volunteer army that protects our nation. American Muslims stand with our fellow citizens in offering both prayers for the victims and sincere condolences to the families of those killed or injured."

Along with innumerable condemnations of terror, CAIR has in the past launched an online anti-terror petition drive called "Not in the Name of Islam," initiated a television public service announcement (PSA) campaign against religious extremism and coordinated a "fatwa," or Islamic religious ruling, against terrorism and extremism.
