CAIR-MI Meets With DHS Assistant Secretary Regarding Immigration Reform

 

( SOUTHFIELD, MI, 9/1/09) - The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) along with other immigration rights advocates yesterday met with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary of Intergovernment Programs Juliette Kayyem to discuss immigration reform at the Arab-American Museum in Dearborn.

 

Kayyem discussed DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano's strategy of proactive engagement with community advocates to address problematic issues relating to immigrants seeking legal residency and citizenship while addressing enforcement concerns.

 

The private meeting, which was jointly organized by DHS and the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS), was attended by organizations and activists representing the Arab-American, Latino-American and American Muslim communities.

 

"We welcome the efforts of DHS to proactively engage the American Muslim community on the immigration reform issue as well as other sensitive issues that are of importance to all Americans, said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.
