CAIR-MI Participates In 'Islam, Muslims and Media' Conference
(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 3/1/10) - A representative of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) recently participated in a two day conference titled, "Islam, Muslims and Media" at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich.
The conference, which was co-sponsored by the Social Science Research Council and the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU) discussed journalism education pertaining to the Muslim world and mainstreaming Muslims in American media.
CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid gave a presentation contrasting balanced and unbalanced portrayals of Muslims in mainstream and ethnic media. Walid used as a primary example the contrasting media coverage of the failed extremist attack of Umar Farouk Abdul-Mutallab over Detroit, Michigan with the recent domestic terrorism attack of Joseph Stack in Austin, Texas.
"We welcome such opportunities to discuss the importance of proper framing and balanced coverage of Muslims in American media with journalism professors and students," said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
