CAIR-MI Rep Discusses Park51 At Political Union
(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 10/26/10) - A representative of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) yesterday participated in a debate about the Park51 Community Center at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.
The debate, which was sponsored by the Michigan Political Union presented arguments for and against the Park51 Community Center in lower Manhattan by speakers and students.
CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid discussed background information on the community center and its imam and presented historical examples of how public opinion polls in America on various issues do not equal moral correctness.
Other presenters included Professor David Baker of the University of Michigan Philosophy Department and Professor Pitor Michalowki of the University of Michigan Near Eastern Studies Department.
Walid also recently discussed the Park51 community center issue at Wayne State University Law School in Detroit and Ferris State University in Big Rapids.
"We welcome such opportunities to debate contemporary issues relating to Islam and American Muslims within civil and respectful environments," said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
