CAIR-MI Rep Speaks About ‘Islam Vs. Extremism’ At College
(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 2/24/10) A representative from the Michigan chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) yesterday gave a lecture titled “Islam Vs. Extremism” at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor.
CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid contrasted mainstream Islamic teachings of moderation in all endeavors and the sanctity of life with extreme expressions of political and religious views.
Examples of condemnable acts of extremism according to mainstream Islam given were the failed attack on a Northwest Airline flight a few months ago over Detroit, Michigan and the recent suicide terrorism attack by Joseph Stack in Austin, Texas.
Some 150 people attended the event, which was sponsored by the Muslim Students Association (MSA).
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
