CAIR-MI Reps Discuss Women's Rights and Moderation in Islam

(SOUTHFIELD, MI, 4/1/10) - Representatives of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) recently gave presentations about women's rights and the rule of moderation within Islam at two institutions of higher learning in Michigan.

CAIR-MI Staff Attorney Lena Masri two days ago discussed the topic "The Rights of Women In Islam" at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn. The lecture presented information distinguishing religiously mandated practices from cultural norms among Muslims and women's rights regarding education and marriage.

CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid yesterday gave a presentation titled "Demystifying Jihad" at Henry Ford Community College, which defined the term jihad (exertion) and gave examples of it regarding self defense and spiritual purification.

Walid yesterday also gave a lecture titled "Islam's Position on Extremism" at Michigan State University in East Lansing, which reiterated the correct meaning of jihad and touched on extremes such as particular lifestyle choices and vitriolic rhetoric that violate the Islamic definition of moderation.

All three lectures were sponsored by the Muslim Students Association (MSA).

"We welcome such opportunities to engage students and staff at colleges to clarify misconceptions about Islam and Muslims," said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid

CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
